Cellular Thermometer for Remote Patient Monitoring

For a post-surgical patient, a transplant recipient or a patient on chemotherapy, a fever is not a symptom to mention at the next appointment — it is a reason to call today. HealthArc’s cellular thermometer puts every temperature reading in front of your care team automatically, the moment it is taken.

Overview

Why Remote Thermometer Monitoring Works

Temperature is the vital sign that most often signals infection, and the one patients are least reliable at reporting. A number written on a notepad, remembered inaccurately, or simply not mentioned because it seemed minor is a number your care team never gets to act on.

A connected thermometer removes the reporting step entirely. Readings transmit as they are taken, thresholds are set per patient — tighter for someone immunocompromised, looser for routine chronic care — and a reading above the line becomes an alert rather than a note in a chart nobody reads until the next visit.

Temperature monitoring supports RPM and is most valuable inside TCM during the post-discharge window when infection risk is highest. Every device in the HealthArc device family reports into one dashboard and one monthly billing record — not a separate portal per vendor.

Device Features

Built for Clinical Programs, Not Consumers

A connected cellular thermometer for infection surveillance, post-surgical follow-up and oncology monitoring, transmitting each reading automatically with configurable fever alerts.

Automatic Transmission

Each reading reaches the platform without the patient writing anything down or reporting it later, which is where temperature data is normally lost.

Per-Patient Fever Thresholds

Set the alert threshold by patient risk. An oncology patient on chemotherapy warrants a tighter limit than a stable chronic care patient, and the platform treats them differently.

Infection Surveillance

Continuous temperature history supports post-surgical follow-up, transplant monitoring and any program where early infection detection changes the outcome.

Cellular Connectivity

4G with 2G fallback and a multicarrier SIM, so readings transmit from the patient’s home without Wi-Fi, an app or a smartphone.

Simple for Any Patient

A single measurement action and a clear display, usable by older patients, caregivers and family members supporting the patient at home.

Complete Audit Trail

Time-stamped readings are retained against the patient record, supporting both the clinical picture and RPM billing documentation.

How It Works

From the Patient’s Home to Your Dashboard

Four steps, none of which require the patient to own a smartphone, install anything or report a number to anyone.

1

The device ships activated

HealthArc procures, configures and ships the thermometer directly to the patient, along with enrollment support and training. It works out of the box — there is no pairing sequence for your staff to talk anyone through.

2

The patient takes a reading

A single action at home, with no app to open and no account to sign into. That simplicity is what keeps adherence intact past the first few weeks.

3

Data transmits over cellular automatically

The reading moves to the HealthArc platform over the mobile network, encrypted and time-stamped. Nothing is transcribed by hand, so nothing is mistyped or forgotten.

4

Your team reviews, acts and bills

Readings are checked against the thresholds you set for that patient, alerts route to the care team, and monitoring days plus management time accumulate into a billing-ready monthly record.

What the device measures, how it connects, and what the patient has to do. The short answer to the last one is: take the reading.

No apps. No pairing. No Wi-Fi. Cellular connectivity is the reason HealthArc programs can enroll patients who do not own a smartphone or have home broadband — typically the highest-risk patients in the panel.

Codes This Device Supports

HealthArc tracks transmission days and management time against each code automatically, so a month either meets the billing threshold or visibly does not.

99453

Setup and patient education for the monitoring device.

99454

Device supply with daily recordings or programmed alerts, per 30 days.

99457

First 20 minutes of monitoring management and interactive communication.

99458

Each additional 20 minutes of monitoring management.

Code requirements, payment rates and monitoring-day thresholds change with each Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Confirm current requirements in the CPT code library and with the CMS Fee Schedule Look-Up Tool before billing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why monitor temperature remotely?
Because fever is often the first sign of infection, and it is the vital sign patients are least reliable at reporting. For post-surgical, transplant and oncology patients, catching a fever the day it appears rather than at the next appointment materially changes what happens next.
Can we set different fever thresholds for different patients?
Yes. Thresholds are configured per patient, so an immunocompromised patient on chemotherapy can be given a tighter limit than a stable chronic-care patient, and each generates alerts against their own threshold.
Does it need an app or Wi-Fi?
No. The thermometer transmits over its own 4G cellular connection with 2G fallback. There is no app, no pairing, no Wi-Fi setup and no account for the patient to manage.
Which CPT codes apply?
Temperature readings support the standard RPM codes — 99453, 99454, 99457 and 99458 — when the program meets CMS requirements for device type, transmission days and management time. See the CPT code library.
